The city of Miami Beach, which is concerned about the large crowds filling the streets of South Beach and the threat of a reviving coronavirus, raised its curfew on Saturday in an effort to end the spring break late at night, which according to her out of control.
The evening clock at 8 p.m. is in effect in the city’s South Beach entertainment district. Hundreds of people showed up on social media videos on Friday outside collected after dark and law enforcement that spreads crowds.
“It looked like a rock concert,” Raul J. Aguila, the interim city manager, said in an urgent news conference on Saturday afternoon. “You could not see the sidewalk, nor could you see grass.”
Florida was reopened months before the rest of the state, long before the recent wave of states like Texas that lifted all or most of the closure restrictions and mask mandates.
Miami-Dade County recently suffered one of the worst outbreaks in the country, with more than 32,000 Florida residents dying from the virus, an unimaginable cost that state leaders rarely recognize. It is suspected that the state also has the highest concentration of B.1.1.7, the more contagious and possibly more deadly virus variant first identified in Britain.
Dr Anthony S. Fauci, the country’s leading expert on infectious diseases, said on Saturday that he was concerned that Americans were becoming too comfortable because vaccinations were accelerating rapidly and the country’s daily case load had fallen far below the peak in January. However, according to a database of the New York Times, the cases looked at a high level, similar to the summer boom.
“History has shown us that when you have that plateau, it’s usually the forerunner of another boom – we’ve actually seen it in the European Union,” Dr. Fauci said in the program “Today”, citing the recent boom in Europe that has prompted governments to reintroduce restrictions on the closure period.
“I’m really worried if we prematurely declare victory that it’s the same thing that’s going to happen,” said Dr. Fauci said about the situation in Europe. “If we can just go on a little bit longer, the more people are vaccinated, the less likely there is a boom.”
In Miami Beach, law enforcement officials said large crowds were drawn to the city because they were looking for a place with fewer virus restrictions. Hotel rooms and flights are very cheap to make up for the months lost time.
Hotels in Miami Beach do not have to close, but guests are asked to stay on the hotel premises after the evening clock, and restaurants, bars and cafes on the sidewalk must close at 20:00.
Miami Beach’s entertainment district includes the iconic Ocean Drive and Collins Avenue, as well as Washington Avenue and Española Way, from Fifth to 16th Streets. Police will also stop people who are not residents of the city, hotel guests or employees working on South Beach from driving into the city along the MacArthur, Venetian and Julia Tuttle roads from 9pm until the next day.
The emergency measures will last 72 hours until the city commission can meet to decide on a long-term plan. Miami-Dade County already has a nationwide curfew rule at midnight.
