EU drug regulator says AstraZeneca vaccine is safe

The European Medicines Agency announced on Thursday that it found the AstraZeneca vaccine ‘safe and effective’, noting that rare cases of bleeding had occurred but that the benefits of the vaccine outweighed the risks.

This vaccine is safe and effective in preventing Covid-19, and its benefits outweigh its risks. PRAC found no evidence of an issue of quality or conformity. PRAC noted that the number of thromboembolic events reported after vaccination is lower than expected in the general population. And PRAC concluded that there is no increase in the overall risk of blood clots with this vaccine. Because the vaccine is effective in preventing Covid-19 disease, which in itself is a cause of blood clots, it is likely to reduce the risks of thrombotic events in general. And the evidence we have at the moment is not sufficient to conclude with certainty whether these side effects are indeed caused by the vaccine. PRAC will therefore continue to gather more information on these conditions, including additional studies, and PRAC will keep it under very close monitoring. EMA and national health authorities will ensure that healthcare professionals and the general public are made aware of this information, and are made aware of the signs and symptoms of concern, so that timely action can be taken to reduce these risks.
