EU chief criticizes AstraZeneca for delivery delays

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen accuses AstraZeneca of supplying coronavirus vaccines and says the EU is ready to use ‘any instrument’ to ensure it gets ‘its fair share’.

AstraZeneca unfortunately underproduced and underdelivered, and this of course painfully reduced the speed of the vaccination campaign. Open roads run in both directions, and therefore we must ensure that there is reciprocity and proportionality. And I want to be clear about reciprocity. If the situation does not change, we will have to reflect on how to make exports to vaccine-producing countries dependent on their level of openness. We therefore export a lot to countries that produce vaccines themselves. And we think it’s an invitation to be open, so that we also see the export of countries return to the European Union. In other words, we want reliable deliveries of vaccines. We want to increase the contracts. We want to see reciprocity and proportionality in exports, and we are ready to use the tool we need.
